Tractor-trailer

An articulated vehicle made of a powered tractor unit coupled to a separate load-carrying trailer, the two being independently assignable resources.

Also: Articulated vehicle, Artic, Tractor unit and trailer

A tractor-trailer (or articulated unit) is a vehicle in two separable parts: a tractor — the powered unit providing the cab and drive but little load space — and a trailer, which carries the load but has no engine. The two couple and uncouple, so one tractor can pull different trailers across a shift and a trailer can be pre-loaded or swapped independently of any tractor. Optrak treats the tractor, the trailer, and the driver as independent, separately schedulable resources, which is what makes trailer swaps, pre-loading, and mid-shift trailer changes planable — see fleet and resources.
